Suggest for investing?

Post by AweLEGO » Fri Mar 21, 2014 5:00 pm

I'm new to this, so I don't have much experience. I'm in Canada, and for my place, there is not much sale (Like even Half Price in here probably only 30%-40% compare to USA's price).

I been around the forum for like a week and I learned that Star Wars and Super Heroes are worth money to invest. But how about another themes like City or Hobbit? Should I buy all 50% off sets that will retire soon or only some sets worth? (I just saw a city set 60004 for $60CAD, which is half price for Canada, should I buy it?)

Also one thing I'm wondering is someone said that just open box and sale individual part, so how can it increases the profit?

Sorry for so many questions, lol. I'm noob at this.

Some people react bitterly to talk of "investing." I would not buy all that are 40%-50% off. And I would not buy something to store to resell later either just because it is a Superhero, Star Wars or City set. Some Star Wars sets are not in high demand years later because it simply isn't that desirable years later. Star Wars especially will often "update" the set. They may remake (often improve) the ship or base and make a newer version of the minifigure. Boba Fett is a good example of this. At the moment there is a Desert Skiff set with Boba Fett and other minifigures that I am tempted to buy 2-3 of and store for resell (when I find a good price)... but if the same Boba Fett or an improved Boba Fett appears in cheaper or more desirable sets in the future this would effect the demand for the current Desert Skiff set. I really like some of the vehicles in some star wars sets. Some of these are in demand because of the vehicle AND the figures. With the Superhero line I think sales are mainly driven by the minifigures in the sets. When buying Superhero sets it will be the minifigures that control demand. I fear that many figures will be "remade" or improved in the future. The good "investments" in these cases will be the sets that include figures that will not be available in the future BUT there is no way of knowing which figures will not pop up again in new sets (same minifig or improved version). At the moment the set with Deadpool seemed like a great investment. Retail was $20. It is retired and I've seen it sell for $40 because it contains Deadpool. If someone hoarded lots of this set and they decide to release him in future sets it will drastically affect the value of the set. As of now they are releasing another set in the near future with both Wolverine and Magneto (and other figures). At one point I considered grabbing a few of the sets with Deadpool because it contained x-men figures (Wolverine, Deadpool and Magneto). I didn't know that they were planning to make another X-men set. "Investing" in LEGO is very risky.

I like to buy a few of my favorite sets that I can find at very reduced prices that I think may be in demand in the future AND that I like enough that I will be ok opening and keeping for myself IF there is no demand for it in the future. I really don't make much money doing this but it does help to support my LEGO hobby.

Many of the sets that I buy duplicates of are sets that contains either builds, pieces, animals or minifigures that I think my son will want when he is older (or me) or that will increase in value. If it is a set that I think my son will want AND it may increase drastically in value that is usually the sort of set I store 1-2 of away for the future.

As for opening and selling piece by piece or minifigure or minifigure it just depends upon the set, parts and pieces.
